The Wild 10 Countdown for February 9, 2011

It’s a new chapter for the countdown as it will be shifted to the blog as a podcast. The good thing is that it will be continuing on but no longer being on the airwaves for the time being. This week’s countdown, there’s no new entries but the top three songs are somewhat in a competitive beat as they are getting popular through airplay and digital release. Without ado, here’s the top 10.
I decided to include the radio show as it could be easier to listen if you do not prefer to listen from the main blog.

1. We Have Everything – Young Galaxy (2nd week as this song is currently out as a music video)

2. Welcome – Hey Rosetta! (Their new album, Seeds, comes out on February 15)

3. Stamp – The Rural Alberta Advantage (Going back up and two of the members appeared on MuchMusic’s The Wedge)

4. Plath Heart – Braids (Steady as they’re still getting airplay)

5. Getcha Good – Jenn Grant (Falling down from #2 last week)

6. I Want The Lights On After Dark – Memphis (Going up a spot)

7. Chinatown – Destroyer (Going up a spot)

8. Hot Mess (featuring Elly Jackson) – Chromeo (Going back up)

The Wild 10 Countdown for February 2, 2011

It’s a new month a new number one to kick off February. That’s right, it’s Montreal’s Young Galaxy taking the top spot as their new album, Shapeshifting is partially out (currently out on iTunes). They are also the X3 Artist of the Month. The only new debut on the countdown is Hey Rosetta! They have a new album coming out this month as well. Overall, there’s not a lot of movement on the countdown and it’s also the final live broadcast as it will be moved to the blog as a podcast. The Wild 10 Countdown will still continue, just not on live terrestrial radio.
Here’s the list.

1. Peripheral Visionaries – Young Galaxy (1st week at #1)

2. Paradise Mountain – Jenn Grant (Down a spot. Temporary replacing Getcha Good on the final live broadcast)

3. Welcome – Hey Rosetta! (new entry)

4. Lemonade – Braids (Steady. Temporary replacing Plath Heart)

5. Tornado ’87 – The Rural Alberta Advantage (Temporary replacing Stamp)

6. Little Voice – Rebekah Higgs (Down from #2)

7. I Want The Lights on After Dark – Memphis (Steady)

8. Chinatown – Destroyer (steady)

9. Hot Mess (featuring Elly Jackson) – Chromeo (down from #6)

10. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans

The Wild 10 Countdown for January 26, 2011

Not much happening on the countdown in terms of debuts. A few songs went up and down. It’s also the final time that Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) by Arcade Fire will be on the countdown. I have broken promises that it would be off but due to a few radio shows that I listen to, it would stay on for another week. Another reason was the guest on my radio show as she really loves the song.
Jenn Grant stays on top for another week as January ends her time as the X3 Artist of the Month. Who will be #1 for the first week of February?
Without further ado, here’s the list.

1. Getcha Good – Jenn Grant (2nd week at #1)

2. Little Voice – Rebekah Higgs (Steady as she was #1 on CBC Radio 3’s R3-30)

3. Peripheral Visionaries – Young Galaxy (Steady. I still avoid saying the song name)

4. Stamp – The Rural Alberta Advantage (Steady. The music video was released.)

5. Plath Heart – Braids (Going up. This band is getting a lot of attention due to album release, the show last Friday and a free song on iTunes Store this week)

6. Hot Mess (featuring Elly Jackson) – Chromeo (Going down a spot)

7. I Want The Lights On After Dark – Memphis (Going up)

8. Chinatown – Destroyer (Going up)

9. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson &  The Weakerthans (Going down)

10. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (It should be the final time that it’s on the countdown.

The Wild 10 Countdown for January 19, 2011

2011 has barely begun and some of the songs on the Wild 10 Countdown are vying for the top spot. From the top 6 six songs, they are generating a lot of airplays on various radio shows. Hot Mess by Chromeo is considered a 2010 track but the new version with Elly Jackson of LaRoux has not been released as a single and considered a 2011 release. Little Voice by Rebekah Higgs is another 2010 release but is getting plays elsewhere.
One song that I was supposed to be out of the countdown was Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) by Arcade Fire. If it was for The Strombo Show on Sunday night, I wouldn’t get rid of it on the countdown.
The only new entry on the countdown is Chinatown by Destroyer. Kaputt will be released on January 25, but it got leaked online before its release date.
A new number one song after Rebekah Higgs was on top for one week. Without further ado, the top 10.

1. Getcha Good – Jenn Grant (Replacing “How I Met You” and she’s the January X3 Artist of The Month. The music video was released last week)

2. Little Voice – Rebekah Higgs (dropping down from the top spot)

3. Peripheral Visionaries – Young Galaxy (the album is nearing soon)

4. Stamp – The Rural Alberta Advantage (falling down a spot but still going strong on the airplay)

5. Hot Mess (featuring Elly Jackson) – Chromeo

6. Plath Heart – Braids (jumping up a few spots as they are in Ottawa on Friday)

7. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (still a local favourite and hanging around the countdown)

8. I Want The Lights On After Dark – Memphis (new entry)

9. Chinatown – Destroyer (new entry)

10. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (it should be the final time on the countdown)

The Wild 10 Countdown for January 12, 2011 and The Rebekah Higgs Interview

No regular entry from my main blog for the time being. It’s the 2nd week of 2011 and so far, there were a lot of 2011 songs on the Wild 10 Countdown. This week’s countdown seemed to have a lot of bands from or now residing in Montreal. Of the bands from Montreals, they are The Luyas, Braids, Arcade Fire, Chromeo and Young Galaxy.
The remaining 2010 songs still on the countdown were Arcade Fire, Rebekah Higgs, and Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans.
For the time being, I am not going to list the top 10 as it’s already posted on the CKCU-FM playlist from the website. To check the playlist, the link is here.

Aside from the new number one for the January 12th edition, the interview with Rebekah Higgs was also aired on the radio show. It’s basically the “first” interview segment for 2011. She’s been getting some buzz on the music website as one of the songs from her Little Voice EP is available as free download. If you like her music, check her Bandcamp site at http://rebekahhiggs.bandcamp.com/.
As usual, I was joined by new co-host, Lauren. She’s still making a great effort at enjoying the new Canadian songs on the countdown and throughout the show.

The Wild 10 Countdown for December 15, 2010 – Final Edition for 2010

Let me clarify, it is not the end of the countdown. It’s just the last for 2010 and it will be on a two week break. The final edition was just the same 10 songs for the past few weeks. Except for the #1 song, the 9 songs were randomly mixed around in different charting position.

Here’s the final top 10 for twenty-ten.

1. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (Number one for the third week as it’s the final #1 for 2010)

2. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (I had a guest host on and she really likes the song)

3. Minimum Wage Lovers – The Mountains & The Trees

4. Not The Stars – Allie Hughes

5. Something Else – Diamond Rings

6. Not In Love (featuring Robert Smith) – Crystal Castles

7. PUSH – Rich Aucoin

8. Little Voice – Rebekah Higgs

9. Stumble – Bonjay

10. Please Bless – Tanya Davis

Happy holidays and see you back in 2011.

The Wild 10 Countdown for December 8, 2010

Supposedly, the December 8th edition of the Wild 10 Countdown was the final countdown of 2010, but I found out I got lots of time for the extended for the couple of Wednesdays. It means that next Wednesday will be the final countdown of 2010 and it will be a random kind as the current 10 songs will be mixed around in the positions.
This week’s countdown had no new entries as the Christmas holiday nears. There were a few gainers, a few non-movers and a few droppers. As mentioned from my blog, I had The Mountains & The Trees as a surprise guest during the countdown. Here’s the list.

1. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (2nd week at the number one spot)

2. Not In Love (featuring Robert Smith) – Crystal Castles (Steady at #2)

3. Something Else – Diamond Rings (Also steady at #3 since last week)

4. PUSH – Rich Aucoin (Going up from #5 last week)

5.  Minimum Wage Lovers – The Mountains & The Trees (Going up to #5. He was in Ottawa recently and had a sold out show at The Black Sheep Inn)

6. Not The Stars – Allie Hughes (Down from #4 last week. She’s doing a Christmas show)

7. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (Even though they earned a Grammy Award nomination, the song is dropping)

8. Little Voice – Rebekah Higgs (Going up a spot. She will be in Ottawa next weekend)

9. Please Bless – Tanya Davis (Going up a spot. She had a good show and turnout at The Black Sheep Inn last Friday)

10. Stumble – Bonjay (Slightly going down)

The Wild 10 Countdown for December 1, 2010

We’re almost to the end of 2010 and this may be the second last countdown for 2010 as the radio show will be going for the Christmas fare in the music category. Finally, Jim Bryson makes to the number one spot as he’s been in total rotation on various CKCU shows and even on CBC Radio 3. He bumps off Diamond Rings as he conclude his run as November’s X3 Artist of the Month. There are two new entries on the countdown and they are Halifax’s Rebekah Higgs and Tanya Davis. Here’s the top 10;

1. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (On top spot at #1. Last week was at #5.)

2. Not In Love (featuring Robert Smith) – Crystal Castles (Steady at #2. The single comes out soon.)

3. Something Else – Diamond Rings (Fallen off the number one spot)

4. Not The Stars – Allie Hughes (Fallen from #3)

5. PUSH – Rich Aucoin (Now in the top 5. Getting some plays on CBC Radio 3.)

6. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (Fallen off the top 5)

7. Minimum Wage Lovers – The Mountain & The Trees (Going up a few spots. He’s getting plays on various shows plus he will be in Ottawa, well in Chelsea, QC this weekend)

8. Stumble – Bonjay (Going up a spot. Still getting plays on various CKCU shows)

9. Little Voices – Rebekah Higgs (New entry. Little Voices EP came out last week)

10. Please Bless – Tanya Davis (New entry. She will be at Raw Sugar Cafe as she’s currently on tour to promote her new album)

The Wild 10 Countdown for November 24, 2010

Ending off the week of November with glitches and a brand new number one. That’s right, Something Else by Diamond Rings bumped off Arcade Fire, who’s been on top for 5 weeks with Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains). It’s fitting that John O of Diamond Rings ends with a November as he’s the X3 Artist of the Month. The countdown itself is still filled some tunes from Electronica musicians. Only one new entry enters the countdown, that’s The Mountains & The Trees as he’s getting plays on various shows on CKCU and CHUO. As December arrives, there’s a chance that next week’s Wild 10 Countdown will be the last of 2010 as I will be playing Christmas tunes and a year end countdown.
Here’s the top 10 for the final week of November.

1. Something Else – Diamond Rings (Bumping off Arcade Fire for the top spot)

2. Not In Love (featuring Robert Smith) – Crystal Castles (Jumping up a couple of spots as the single nears in a few weeks)

3. Not The Stars – Allie Hughes

4. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (Going down from #1 to #4. It’s still a great track from The Suburbs)

5. Wild Folk – Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (It’s a replacement to Constellation)

6. Lonely’s Lunch – You Say Party

7. PUSH – Rich Aucoin

8. Minimum Wage Lovers – The Mountains & The Trees (New entry as mentioned above. He will having a concert in the new year)

9. Stumble – Bonjay

10. We, Myself, And I – Shad (Falling four spots)

The Wild 10 Countdown for November 17, 2010

It was the CKCU 35th Anniversary Party withdrawal and I was supposed to bump Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) off the #1 spot but due to the fact that the song was performed on Saturday Night Live, it gave me a total surprise as I wasn’t expecting the song to be performed. It stays on for a 5th week because of the musical performance. There was only new debut and it’s from Toronto’s Bonjay. The gainers on the countdown were Rich Aucoin, You Say Party & Crystal Castles. Here’s the top 10.

1. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) – Arcade Fire (5th week)

2. Something Else by Diamond Rings (Going up a spot and he’s currently the November X3 Artist of the Month)

3. Constellation by Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans (Down a spot but still getting plays on various radio shows)

4. Not The Stars by Allie Hughes (Steady)

5. Not In Love (featuring Robert Smith) by Crystal Castles (Going up. Getting plays on various radio shows.)

6. We, Myself, And I by Shad (Down a spot and off the big 5)

7. Lonely’s Lunch by You Say Party (Up 2 spots. The music video is still getting some talk over on social media sites)

8. PUSH by Rich Aucoin (Up 2 spots from last week.)

9. Red Lights by Holy Fuck (Down a few spots.)

10. Stumble by Bonjay (New entry. They were in Ottawa last Friday)
